Should I buy a motorbike or scooter?

Whether a motorbike or scooter better suits you will depend on what you’re using it for. A scooter’s low top speed won’t have as much of an impact on city riding and short journeys, but you may find the lack of power to be dangerous to yourself and others on open roads. When do motorcycles need a service and MOT?

All motorcycles older than three years must have a valid MOT certificate. You can check your MOT status on the Gov website . This should also be able to tell you the mileage at the time of your last test, and help you check the authenticity of any paperwork you get with your motorbike. How often your motorcycle requires servicing will vary, though it is normally required annually or once you reach a certain number of miles. Check your owner’s manual for more detail.

AM Licence Bikes

The AM licence is the most basic you can get, it lets you ride scooters and mopeds, small three-wheelers and light quads up to 50cc.

A1 Licence Bikes

Once you hold an A1 licence, you will be ready to ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc and with a maximum power of 11KW.

A2 Licence Bikes

Once you progress to an A2 licence, you can ride bikes with a limit of 35kW or 47bhp & power to weight ratio under 0.2kW or 0.26bhp per kg.
