- From 1 April 2026 renters, flat owners, residential landlords, businesses and households with on-street parking will be eligible for up to £500 towards EV charging point installation
- Schools will be eligible for grants of up to £2,000 per socket
- Councils will receive funding to install public charging points and to support households without driveways to charge their cars
When the Government announced its Electric Car Grant last summer it also promised more support to make accessing charging easier. Today it has revealed a grant of up to £500 towards charging point installation will soon be available for renters, flat owners, residential landlords, businesses and homeowners without a driveway.
Previously a £350 grant has been available to these groups, but this updated scheme will take effect from 1 April 2026 and run until March 2027. It is intended to cover almost half the cost of a typical charging point installation and allow drivers to save on energy costs by charging at home using a dedicated EV tariff. This latest incentive follows the Department for Transport’s ‘Get that electric feeling’ campaign which claims making the switch to an electric car could save drivers up to £1,400.

Following the announcement Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, Keir Mather said: "We're taking action to make EV ownership the affordable choice for everyone – not just those with driveways. Bigger grants mean families, flat owners, renters and small businesses can now install a charger for almost half the usual cost, with home charging costing as little as 2p a mile.”
Additionally, schools will be eligible for grants of up to £2,000 per socket to increase the 3,700 sockets already in place. Plus, the Government will be offering more funding to councils to help them increase the public charging network and to install channels in pavements so homeowners with on-street parking can charge their car safely.
