Ditch the car, hop on a Flying Flea!
Has historic motorcycle brand Royal Enfield stumbled on the future of two-wheeled electric mobility?

It’s got a novelty name but the Royal Enfield Flying Flea could mark the moment Indian manufacturing and tech does for electrifying motorcycling what China has done for cars.
Check out our full review on the Autotrader bike channel to find out more but, to cut to the chase, the Flying Flea combines slick design, cutting-edge engineering and a cool back story relating to its inspiration as a lightweight motorcycle dropped from planes to help paratroopers get to where they needed to be. All this for just £5,300, and yours to ride on L-plates after a simple one-day CBT course as your gateway to life on two wheels.
Certainly, for a younger, urban generation raised on Lime bikes and rental e-scooters it’s an interesting proposition. Just as it is for those in the suburbs with space in the garage for something cheap and sustainable for running errands or getting to the station for the morning commute.
True, the 4kWh battery, 50-mile range and power output of just 11 horsepower don’t sound that impressive in the context of what electric cars are putting out. But the Flying Flea is cheaper, more sustainable and – most of all – huge fun to ride. It’s also very easy, bicycle style brakes and no gears or clutch to get your head around meaning you just jump on, twist the throttle and go. It’s also got impressive tech, your phone acting as the key and connection to the bike to configure it to your needs, take calls on the move, manage your music or podcasts or get to where you’re going via the Google Maps powered navigation in the Royal Enfield app, projected directly onto the neat, circular display. A neat compartment on what would usually be the fuel tank gives you somewhere to stash your phone on the go, and even contains a wireless charging pad so you don’t get stranded with a flat battery in your handset. Just one example of many thoughtful touches and commuter-friendly features.
